Erstes Team-Briefing für die wissenschaftlichen Beobachter zum Forschungsprojekt über die Kandidatenaufstellung zur Bundestagswahl 2017

25 members of the project team - political science staff, as well as masters and graduates of from Halle - met on 23 September 2016 for a full-day event in order to familiarize themselves with the contents of the project and jointly plan field research.

Mid-September marked the starting point for the candidates and their research project. Eleven members of our project team participated in four assembly meetings in Brandenburg, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Rheinland-Pfalz and Sachsen. Four questionnaires, two procedures for scientific observation and a guide for short interviews were tested.

The journal for strategic analysis (SIRIUS) offers contributions from the scientific community which can provide valuable impulses for the political debate in Germany as well as in the broader German-speaking region (in particular for Switzerland and Austria). It seeks to include the world of foreign and security-policy think tanks and research institutes in this debate. It focuses on a scientific branch of strategic studies. The editors are the chairman of the board of the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Demokratie and director of the Institute for Security Policy Prof. Dr. Joachim Krause; the President of the Federal Academy of Security Policy, Dr. Karl-Heinz Kamp; Professor Dr. Carlo Masala from the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich as well as Prof. Dr. Andreas Wenger from the CSS of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich.

The publication of SIRIUS is made possible by the Foundation for Science and Democracy, which aims to contribute to a practice-oriented discourse on strategic political challenges.

It deals with with Islamic radicalization in the Western world,  the global task of protecting the climatea as well as with the crisis of the European Union. Various essays and analyzes provide an overview of the discussion of the topics, supplemented by selected reviews.

The panel discussion on the current turning point in German foreign policy and security policy in the rooms of the German Society for Foreign Affairs was well attended. Dr. Daniela Schwarzer, Dr. Hans-Peter Bartels, and Prof. Dr. Joachim Krause discussed, among other things, the role of scenarios for preparing for political surprises such as the Brexit and also what Germany's leadership role within the future European structure could be. Such strategic considerations, in view of current international political change, will also be dealt with in the journal SIRIUS. The visitors had the opportunity take a look at the first printed copies and gain first impressions of the magazine’s aims and scope.
