Like the founder during his lifetime, SW&D considers the clarification of political science issues in the field of foreign and security policy to be indispensable for the strengthening and preservation of democratic systems. Due to the outstanding importance of this field of research, SW&D has been supporting the Institute for Security Policy at Kiel University (ISPK)<\/strong><\/a> As the main funding partner, SW&D is deliberately institutionalised - rather than project-based, as is often the case in science. Even though the Institute itself is not an institution of the Foundation, there is close, collegial cooperation between SW&D and the ISPK at all levels. With the ISPK moving into its offices at the Foundation's headquarters in Kiel, the Foundation and the Institute are also very close in terms of space.<\/p>

The origins of the ISPK date back to 1983, when the institute was affiliated to Kiel University (CAU) by decision of the Schleswig-Holstein Minister of Education and Cultural Affairs. In 2015, the ISPK was transformed into a non-profit limited company and is now firmly anchored in the research landscape as an affiliated institute of the CAU. The ISPK's excellent networking with partners from science and practice ensures that its research results are always up-to-date and practical.<\/p>

The ISPK's research work is divided into four areas: Maritime Strategy and Security, Terrorism and Radicalisation Research, Conflict Research and Strategic Development in the Asia-Pacific Region. Thanks to institutional funding from SW&D, the ISPK is able to work on these topics independently of short-term project requirements and continuously develop its work. This independence strengthens the ISPK's ability to make a significant contribution to the security policy discourse in Germany through policy-oriented research.<\/p>
