Against the backdrop of the changed geopolitical situation, this issue examines the contribution that academic expertise can make to the analysis of war, strategy and security policy. It focuses on the development of strategic thinking in Germany, the institutional framework for security policy research, and the relationship between academia, politics and military practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Gerlinde Groitl<\/strong> examines recent developments in the <strong>International Relations<\/strong> and identifies shortcomings, particularly in Germany, in strategic thinking about war, power and deterrence. She calls for a greater emphasis on realist security and strategic studies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ulrich Schlie<\/strong> shows the development of the <strong>Germany\u2019s strategic culture<\/strong> ... and examines the contribution of the humanities and social sciences to thinking about war and peace. In doing so, he also considers the role of political science in the practice of security and defence policy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Christoph Meyer<\/strong> examines shortcomings in the <strong>institutional learning and a culture of learning from mistakes<\/strong> German foreign and security policy, and, by comparing it with that of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, draws up recommendations for improved learning structures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stefan Messingschlager <\/strong>analyses the public role of prominent <strong>Security experts<\/strong> since the turn of the millennium and examines the circumstances behind their increased prominence in the security policy debate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Craig Stockings <\/strong>shows the development of the <strong>official military historiography in Australia<\/strong> and highlights its significance at the intersection of state authority, academic independence and democratic accountability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Garth Pratten<\/strong> examines the significance of the <strong>Documentation of military operations<\/strong> for institutional knowledge-building and historical reflection. This is based on his experiences as an Operational Record Keeper in Afghanistan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sigbj\u00f8rn Halsne and Paal Sigurd Hilde <\/strong>examine, using the Norwegian Afghanistan Commissions as a case study, how states <strong>Experiences from overseas missions<\/strong> analyse and translate into institutional learning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Michael R\u00fchle<\/strong> explores the possibilities and limitations <strong>academic policy advice on security policy <\/strong>and examines the role of external expertise in political decision-making.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Liana Fix <\/strong>examines the role of scientific expertise in times of geopolitical upheaval and argues in favour of working with <strong>Scenarios rather than supposedly reliable individual forecasts<\/strong>.
