Our Institute for Parliamentary Research has published the first results of its Parliamentarism study 2026 was published. This shows an ambivalent picture of public perception of the German Bundestag: while a large majority of the population supports the idea of democracy in principle, the actual work of parliament is viewed much more critically. Criticism is particularly frequently levelled at lengthy decision-making processes and inadequate communication of parliamentary work. At the same time, the central role of the Bundestag as a democratic legitimising body remains largely undisputed, and a clear majority rejects the idea of bypassing parliament even in crisis situations.
